Further evidence from retailers in Covent Garden shows that sales trebled once REGULAR street activity was established. The combination of REGULAR outdoor activity and a pleasant ambience apparently encourages people to enter an area, to shop and to eat and drink.

In the past independent licensees in The Quarter have investigated the possibility of uniform umbrellas, tables and chairs throughout the streets. The need, however, to maintain access and egress for emergency vehicles has made it impossible to gain permission.

The industrial cantilevered umbrella shown here is a new product of sufficient standard to allow the maintenance of a pedestrian thoroughfare, whilst, at the same time, in the event of an emergency, permitting vehicular access throughout The Quarter. This is currently being discussed with planners as an option for all four streets.

The capital investment requirements would be significant. The mechanism for managing the space also requires careful attention. As progress is made this page will be updated.
